BioPerine and Drug Interactions: What to Know
The same mechanism that makes BioPerine effective at enhancing supplement absorption, inhibition of cytochrome P450 liver enzymes, can also affect the metabolism of pharmaceutical medications. CYP3A4 in particular is responsible for metabolising a large number of common drugs including certain statins, calcium channel blockers, immunosuppressants, and some antibiotics.
By inhibiting CYP3A4, piperine can increase blood levels of these medications beyond their intended therapeutic range. At the doses used in supplement formulations, typically 5mg to 20mg of BioPerine per serving, this interaction is generally considered clinically insignificant for most people. How Much BioPerine is Effective?
The most widely cited study on BioPerine and curcumin bioavailability used 20mg of piperine. Most supplement formulations use between 5mg and 20mg of BioPerine per serving, with the majority of research supporting 5mg to 10mg as an effective dose for meaningful bioavailability enhancement across most compounds.
More is not necessarily better with BioPerine. At higher doses the drug interaction risk increases and there is no evidence that doses above 20mg produce proportionally greater bioavailability enhancement. The standard 5mg to 10mg range used in most quality supplements is both effective and safe.
